Supported Units
- Meter per second (m/s): The meter per second is the SI base unit of speed, representing a distance of one meter traveled in one second. It is the standard unit used in physics textbooks and scientific papers worldwide. In everyday life, wind speed is commonly reported in meters per second, and severe weather warnings use this unit to define storm intensity. The speed of sound in air is approximately 340 m/s, and the speed of light is about 300 million m/s.
- Kilometer per hour (km/h): The kilometer per hour is a unit of speed expressing the number of kilometers traveled in one hour. It is the standard unit for vehicle speed in most countries, displayed on road signs and car speedometers. The top speed of Japan's bullet train is about 320 km/h, and a world-class marathon runner maintains a pace of roughly 21 km/h. One km/h equals approximately 0.2778 m/s.
- Mile per hour (mph): The mile per hour is a unit of speed used primarily in the United States and the United Kingdom for road speed limits and vehicle speeds. US highway speed limits typically range from 55 to 75 mph, while residential areas are usually 25 to 35 mph. In sports, baseball pitching speeds (topping out around 105 mph in Major League Baseball) and golf swing speeds are expressed in mph. One mph is exactly 0.44704 m/s.
- Knot (kn): The knot is a unit of speed equal to one nautical mile (1,852 meters) per hour. It is the standard unit for maritime and aviation speed worldwide. Ship speeds, aircraft airspeeds, and wind speeds in marine forecasts are all commonly expressed in knots. The name comes from the historical practice of measuring a ship's speed by counting knots on a rope paid out over a fixed time. One knot equals approximately 0.5144 m/s.
- Foot per second (ft/s): The foot per second is a unit of speed equal to 0.3048 meters per second. It is used primarily in the United States in engineering and ballistics. Muzzle velocities of firearms are traditionally expressed in ft/s, with typical rifle rounds ranging from 2,000 to 3,000 ft/s. It is also used in HVAC engineering for duct air velocity and in various American industrial standards. One ft/s is exactly 0.3048 m/s.
- Mach (Ma): The Mach number is the ratio of an object's speed to the speed of sound. Named after physicist Ernst Mach, Mach 1 equals the speed of sound, approximately 340 m/s in standard atmosphere. It is primarily used in aerospace: the Concorde cruised at Mach 2.04, and modern fighter jets are rated by their maximum Mach number. Exceeding Mach 1 produces a sonic boom. For conversion purposes, this tool uses the standard atmosphere speed of sound at sea level (15 degrees Celsius), which is 343 m/s.
